This time, let's see how to replace the lubrication of the caliper slide pins and replace the dust boots on the example of Lexus RX300.

In this article, I will not disassemble the piston, but be sure to do it in the next articles. I recommend you to buy a front brake caliper repair kit, which includes all necessary parts, instead of buying dust boots separately.
Here it is:

- Grease for sliding pins;
If you decide not to buy a repair kit, and buy only the boots, be sure to look for a special lubricant designed for brake calipers, do not use grease for CV joints. Grease should retain its properties at a very large range of temperatures. For example, when driving on mountain roads, the temperature of the caliper parts can exceed 302 °F.
You need the following tools:
- Socket set (12 mm, 14 mm, 22 mm);
- Torque wrench (up to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbf));
- Slotted screwdriver;
- Small hammer.

In the photo above you can see how it was before the maintenance. Bleeding plug cap is seriously damaged. Dust boot of the upper slide pin is not properly installed (this happens when replacing brake pads – caliper lifted upward, dust boot is deformed and then do not returned in place). I think there is a lot of dirt inside.
Using a 14 mm socket loosen two installation bolts and completely remove them. Prepare a piece of wire and hang the caliper on a shock absorber's spring. If you don't change the brake pads, leave them in place.
Remove both slider pins, using a small hammer and a screwdriver, tap out old dust boots.
Remove the dirty grease and old bushing from the pins. Lubricate the new bushing and install it to the upper sliding pin.
Clean out old grease from the holes in torque plate. Apply new grease on the sliding pins and into the holes. Apply small amount of grease on the metal parts of the dust boots. Using a 22- 24 mm socket and small hammer, tap in the new dust boots. Insert sliding pins in place (with sliding bushing into the upper part). Check that the dust boots are properly in place and sliding pins can move normally.
Assemble the caliper and tighten two bolts (torque 34 Nm (25 ft. lbf)).
The rear caliper is slightly different. For example, there are three dust boots instead of two.

The dust boots do not have any metal parts and can be easily removed for cleaning. To hang up the caliper you need to remove only one lower bolt.

The assembly does not represent any complexities. Torque for the lower bolt - 20 Nm (14 ft. lbf).
